They were showing "Blood Alley" on TCM today and Ben Mankiewicz mentioned that John Wayne promoted the film when he made his guest appearance on "I Love Lucy". B)

I really need to get around to watching this. And the High & The Mighty. I want to see if my motor conks out as well. ;)

LOL! Yeah, i laughed out loud the couple of times i saw this turkey was playing on TCM and i remembered him pushing that crap on ILL. I have NEVER liked any John Wayne movie, he's always just playing himself. Actually ir was a hoot seeing him on ILL as he finally was playing someone likeable and he handled the comedy very well. And then, when i found out what a BIG Lucy fan he was, i finally looked at some of his better crap, like the great movies with Maureen O'hara and a few others including his one gem, Rooster Cogburn.

I've never been a big fan of "John Wain", mysekf, but in addition to The Quiet Man, McClintock, and Rooster Cogburn, I think my favourite one of his is his final film, "The Shootist", with Lauren Bacall, Ron Howard, and Jimmy Stewart. Great movie!

I'll never forget the sight of that old republican war monger giving an Oscar to a movie that was so anti war, The Deer Hunter, and best actor and actress that year went to anti Vietnam crusader Hanoi Jane Fonda and nowadays real jerk Jon Voight, that had to hurt Wayne, LOL! But he got a beautiful ovation anyway, he was clearly loved by many.

I love "True Grit"! Re: "The High And The Mighty"...my Mom thinks JW is the worst actor on the planet (but she loves that theme song) and in many ways...he is. But it just kinda "works" for him doesn't it. Great..big...TREE..of a man. Just like Kathy Hepburn said. And really...there's nothing sexier than that.... B)

And Joy Behar also had a rather lengthy Lucy mention on her show tonight courtesy of The Divine Miss M, Bette Midler. Bette showed a clip of her HBO special based on her show that airs New year's Eve. The theatricality of one segment with Bette in a BIG splashy number reminded Joy of Lucy in her heyday on the show so she mentionned it and Bette started saying how she worshipped Lucy, loved her so much, that she had her over to the house and gary was there too, she was just starting out so i guess that means Bette COULD have been on Lucy's show then as we mentionned in other thread. She said she played scrabble with Lucy so this was a long time ago, even before her backgammon infatuation. Bette alluded to Lucy's VERY LOW voice saying she had abused it so long with that high pitched one that she lost all middle ground. She said the scrabble table was cemented to the ground with a BIG dictionnary on it and Lucy put down a seven letter eord as they started the game and Bette knew then that Lucy wasn't fooling around with this game, LOL!

Bette was great on Joy's show. I am beginning to think that "The Joy Behar Show" will be my new "Larry King". Not crazy about the host, but love the guests! :lucysmirk:

So true, i soured on Joy also, sometimes her questions are so stupid they evoke memories of Larry King and she keeps repeating the same things over and over reminding me of ME, LOL! Bette was terrific, the interview was much too short, if only she had been on for the whole hour as i thought she would, like we needed to hear that crap for half an hour before. One of the websites had said, Bette will be on Joy's show tonight unless Lindsay Lohan sneezes or something like that.

Ok, now this time it was Dick Cavett telling Craig Ferguson that he drew a blank when someone asked him who he had had on his show that night and he forgot someone as OBSCURE as Lucille Ball. He was telling a story about Carson saying he could not recall who he had had on that night to his doorman, so Cavett thought he'd make him feel better telling him he forgot someone as iconic as LB.
