JAMES GARNER, GONE AT 86

One of the few greats to have succeeded just as well in television as he did in films.  His Maverick western television series went up against Sullivan and still was a success.  His movies with Doris Day, The Children's Hour, the Americanization of Emily among many others were hits.  Even being nominated for an Oscar for his part in Murphy's Romance.

Lucy was a BIG fan of his.  When they guested together on a talk show one time, she knew he had an addiction for chocolate chip cookies, so she bought him a huge bag made up like a cookie, filled with his favorite food.  Then, in case he didn't appreciate the gesture enough, she even mentioned how SPENSIVE it was, LOL!

Hey, guy - what 'talk show' did they appear together on?  I'd like to add THAT to his bio in chronology.  If you know, please spill....Loving you, JK

Yes...this is what saddens me: we're slowly but surely losing the TV icons we grew up with! Thank GOD most of my favorite TV moms/ladies (e.g. Shirley Jones, Flo Henderson, Carol Burnett, Barbara Eden etc.) are still around, despite the fact they're all now near or over 80!!!

Guess it just makes me appreciate 'em more than ever!!! :D

What a terrific actor. I hope TCM shows The Thrill of It All in tribute.

Lucy and James appeared together on the May 16, 1977 episode of Dinah! Garner's Americanization of Emily and Great Escape co-star James Coburn was also on the show. It was clear Lucy really loved James Garner.

Sorry Joyce, but I have no idea WHICH talk show it was.  Maybe it was the Dinah that Harry mentioned, I mean, could they have done TWO talk shows together?  You're right Brock and Joey, they're all going, but some are still with us thank God and people are living much longer these days.  Of course with every Burnett and Jones we are fortunate to still have with us, some of us aren't that sad about losing people like Mickey Rooney, LOL!  And others, LOL!

Doris Day's statement:

"I loved Jimmy. He was a wonderful actor and a joy to work with. We made two films together and just clicked from the minute we met. We remained friends over the years and spoke often on the phone. I knew he was quite ill and unable to talk on the phone in recent months. The world has lost an exceptional human being and I lost a dear friend. I will miss him so much."

I LOVE James Garner! He was so good with Doris Day in the two films they made together, and I love the Rockford Files as well. (My husband pokes fun at me for being 29 and having a Rockford addiction...lol.) He was so good in everything he was in. He was even great on 8 Simple Rules after John Ritter died. I love the fact that he was a "man's man" but had a gentle touch and was very handsome. I was so sad to hear of his passing. There really aren't any leading men like that today, in my opinion.
