For goodness sakes, you'd think Time Life would let Vicki hand pick a few for once...

If only Red had been included, it would be THREE Fave Redheads. He certainly had his share of groovy guest stars- heck, I'm pretty sure the Jackson 5 made their TV debut on the show- possibly the Rolling Stones, too. I think his writers were at least a little better than Bob Hope's. Oh well. Probably tied up in legal red tape.

I wonder how much of this set is new and how much is just compiled from earlier releases. The fact that Andy Williams picked his personal favorites makes me think that they're just repackaging an older DVD. Either that or they're using Ouija boards at headquarters.

This makes me think of when I was little and they'd always have ads for Time Life's best of The Dean Martin Show releases.

Those angels at Time/Life have done it again! As announced a couple of weeks ago, they're releasing some RARE Red Skelton- episodes that haven't been seen since they aired more than fifty years ago. These middle seasons of the series have been in such a deadlock, I can only imagine what was done to get them released. (They're definitely going against the stipulations of Skelton's will by doing this).

Included in the new set:

  • 31 long-lost episodes that aired between the 16th and 19th seasons of the show (plus bonus features)
  • A collection of Red's "farewell" specials that aired on HBO in the 80s
  • A special commemorative book

The "Deluxe Edition" includes the above, plus:

  • An 8-DVD set of episodes from the first four seasons
  • The complete final season

Going against his will? I hope there won't be a legal battle that puts the kibosh on this. They must've come to an arrangement with the family.

What exactly were the stipulations he set forth?

As far as I know it, the Red Skelton Estate owns most or all of the series. It's alleged that Red was so bitter about being canceled by CBS in 1970's Rural Purge that he wouldn't allow his series to be rerun and that he had it written in his will that after his death ALL tapes of his series were to be burned. Apparently his former writers took him to court on this around 1979, which caused a bit of a media stir. When asked about it Red said it was a misunderstanding and in 1980 he agreed to have eight seasons of the show preserved, but I'm pretty sure the entire series is in existence. I don't know the exact story, but I expect that all releases of the series have been approved by his widow Lothian.

Fairfax, VA - Red Skelton was a brilliant performer, a passionate patriot, and a master of simple, hilarious and classic comedy. Now, home audiences can be entertained by America's Clown Prince any time with brilliant full-color episodes of The Red Skelton Hour, some of which have been unseen for over 50 years! After purchasing an old movie studio and converting it for TV productions, Red was the first CBS host to begin taping his weekly programs in color. And now, on January 3, Time Life brings viewers back to a simpler time with THE RED SKELTON HOUR IN COLOR, showcasing never-before-released shows as they were originally broadcast more than 50 years ago.

One of the country's most treasured comedians, Skelton kept TV audiences in stitches for 20 groundbreaking seasons on The Red Skelton Show. The son of a circus clown, Red always had a twinkle in his eye and a spring in his step (often accompanied by a cowbell sound effect); his heart was pure gold, his jokes were silly and his gifts for physical comedy were unparalleled. And from his inimitable comic mind also came a memorable lineup of zany characters including the country bumpkin Clem Kadiddlehopper, the lovable hobo Freddie the Freeloader, Sheriff Deadeye and more.

Available in two configurations, THE RED SKELTON HOUR IN COLOR - perfect viewing for the whole family - is packed with hilarious, heartwarming humor. The 3-disc collector's set ($29.95 srp) features 12 never-before-released episodes, including best-loved sketches with Freddie the Freeloader joining a love-in with hippie Tim Conway; Sheriff Deadeye facing off with Rooster Cogburn (John Wayne); and Clem Kadiddlehopper being mistaken for a robot by mad scientists Boris Karloff and Vincent Price. Other fan favorite sketches include classics such as "Dial M for Moron" with Phyllis Diller, "Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Dumb" with George Gobel, and "Eenie Meenie Minee Schmo" with Mickey Rooney. The single disc release ($12.95 srp) includes 4 complete episodes. Additionally, both releases include exclusive new interviews with Bobby Rydell and Vicki Lawrence.

There's no business like funny business, and no one did it better than Red...on full, hilarious display in THE RED SKLETON HOUR IN COLOR!

Bobby Rydell recurred on the show- probably in some of the episodes they're releasing. I have NO idea what Vicki Lawrence's connection would be.

Interesting! I had no idea (haven't seen any of Red's shows since their original CBS & NBC airings)! Still doesn't "explain" Mama Lawrence though...

Wait! I just made a connection- between 1967 and 1970, TCBS and TRSH were both taped at the CBS Television City Complex.

Nice try! :lucywow:

Happy to say that the Skelton set was under the tree on Christmas. From what I've watched so far, the unreleased episodes are lots of wacky, late 60s fun. The episodes are mostly complete- if anything's cut it's just the occaisional musical number. So far, every one of the "lost" episodes has had Lucy writers on staff- usually Fox & Jacobs, and in one instance Schiller and Weiskopf. There have also been a couple of Lucy regulars in small roles- Reta Shaw and Doris Singleton!

Don't forget Vivian, who starred with Red in more than one episode.... :fabrary:
