There was some bad blood between Lucy and Jack Palance.   He probably complained about the quality of "Greatest Show" scripts.  I don't know if the show was any good.  It didn't bowl the critics over and lasted only one season.  It was done in color, shown in b/w like Lucy Show.  Because of being in color, it did have some syndication.

About his behavior on the "Greatest" set, Lucy something about temperamental actors adding: "like Jack Palance and you can quote me".

When Lucy was inducted into the TV Hall of Fame, the crowd stood and cheered, except for Palance who sat stone-faced, looking away from the stage.  He was there for Paddy Chayefsky, I think, having starred in the live TV version of his "Requiem for a Heavyweight".

The 1963 season started promisingly for Desilu, with 3 series on the air, the most in a long time.  TLS, Greatest, and Glynis.  With Glynis canceled mid-season and Greatest at the end of the year, the fall of 1964 saw Desilu with only one show.  Ditto 1965.  1966 was a turnaround year,  Just when things were looking up, Lucy sold Desilu.

BTW, I looked up Desilu on wikipedia.  It lists all shows produced by and filmed at Desilu but does not give an isolated list of Desilu-owned productions, but it did contain one fun fact:

"In 2016, The Hensley Group acquired the Desilu brand and controls Desilu Corporation, the parent to Desilu Studios, Desilu Productions and Desilu Resorts & Casinos."

DESILU has RESORTS & CASINOS??

I had the pleasure a few years ago of watching this on a big screen at the Beverly Hills branch of the Paley Center for Media and it looked GLORIOUS!

It MUST have been a restored print as it looked as if it had just been shot ...recently, not decades prior. (Such was the clarity of this print (whether it was digitally projected or film, I'm not sure) that in many shots you could easily see where LB's make-up ended and her own skin color began, particularly around the jawline...it was something to behold!! :HALKING:

The script may have been wanting as were the special effects but you have to consider the era when hour-long dramas --particularly one which heavily featured animals in the mix--were a bit cheesier for lack of a better word and much less "sophisticated" than what we've become more accustomed...especially in this era of CGI and other digital effects.

There's no faulting though Lucy's effective, heart-rending dramatic portrayal as a tough-as-nails veteran circus performer who was suddenly thrust in the role of surrogate mother/caregiver.  One of her finest dramatic hours, IMHO.

It was however, like Stone Pillow decades later, another example of the fine actress she truly was rising waaaaay above the material she had to work with. :lucyhorror:

I caught this once at the Paley Center and was very impressed by Lucy's performance. I so wish she did more drama at this stage of her career because she was very good at it. What Now Catherine Curtis is another example, even though that script could have been better. Lucy always talked down her dramatic work and never seemed like she had a draw to do it. By this time I think she may have thought she was letting down her fans if she wasn't wall to wall comedy.

Shelly, funny we both saw this at the Paley -- mine was in California, did you see it in NY?

I agree too about her doing more drama, as glorious as it was to see her make us laugh...she really could do it ALL.

Just wish she'd been more secure in her talent and REALLY wish by this point that she didn't give such a damn/worry about what the "fans" wanted her to do and just go with her gut and do whatever the best material/parts she was offered and be damned the critics, etc. etc.  .....Imagine what we would have enjoyed besides this, LWL and Stone Pillow!!! :HALKING:
