Fearing that he was the latest in a lineup of targets that includes former president Barack Obama and Congresswoman Maxine Waters, the "Babalu" singer said he only contacted authorities at the urging of his wife, Lucille, who claimed to have no clue where the package could have come from. The bomb squad arrived at 623 East 68th Street at 10:17 AM as the building was being evacuated. The package was opened and revealed to contain nothing but a new hat, recently purchased at the Gimbel's Basement Sale. According to a testimony from the Ricardo's landlady, Mrs. Frederick H. Mertz, Mrs. Ricardo purchased the hat with hopes that her husband wouldn't discover it. As soon as he did, she created the "suspicious package" ruse to avoid being chastised for her spendthrift ways.
