1.01 - Viv's New Neighbors

Vern and Vivian Bunson return to Danfield (they are living in the house formerly owned by Lucy) from their honeymoon to find a surprise waiting for them on the doorstep: Sherman. Believing Sherman was to spend another week with his father, Vivian is enraged until Sherman drops the bomb. Ralph Bagley has moved in next door. Not even bothering to help bring in the luggage, Viv storms over and confronts Ralph's new wife, Loretta, a bombastic Italian lady who takes an immediate shine to Viv and invites her in for tea (having heard SO much about her from Ralph). Ralph, meanwhile, has gone over to shoot the breeze with Vern, and the women and the men spend a delightful afternoon together and it isn't until the end of the day that Viv remembers she's mad at anyone. Ralph is now established as a perpetual thorn in her side while Loretta has the makings of a fine new friend.

1.02 - Viv Holds a Bakesale

The bank president, Mr. Barnsdahl (having resumed his post following the departure of Mr. Mooney to Los Angeles), drops by to inform Viv of a rather troublesome fact: In addition to inheriting the house from Lucy, Viv also inherited all of Lucy's debts on the property. It seems that Mrs. Carmichael was rather lax about paying off the mortgage towards the end and failed to inform Viv of that fact. Viv, now knowing exactly which bills flew off the Lousy Susan and got picked up by a system developed by Hoover, immediately springs to action. With the aid of Loretta, a legend at whipping up Italian recipes, they arrange a bakesale. Thelma, Kathleen, Dorothy and Audrey (recast with Doris Singleton) also agree to pitch in to help Viv out. But come the day of the sale, Loretta is so mortified to find her recipes sharing table space with the other women's "inferior" offerings, she renegs on the whole deal and begins keeping the profits for herself. Things soon break into an all out war, with baked goods flying everywhere, until Mr. Barnsdahl stops by to inform Viv that Lucy had accumulated enough interest in her long-forgotten Christmas Club account to cover the expenses that built up under her ownership of the house.

1.03 - Viv's Sister-in-Law

Enid Bagley (Iris Adrian) is in town, taking care of her brother while Loretta has the flu. Enid has always loathed Viv due to the lies Ralph has fed her and is none too pleased to see her. Viv finally gets even by telling Enid all the bad things about Ralph, corroborated by Sherman. Believing her nephew, Enid proceeds to make Ralph's life hell and becomes a new friend to Viv.

1.04 - Viv's Anniversary Party

Viv is hurt that Vern doesn't remember it's the anniversary of their first date. Vern, perplexed at Vivian's morose attitude and even more perplexed at her refusing to enlighten him about what's wrong, checks in with Loretta to find out if she knows anything. Loretta's not talking, either, but Ralph overhears him and decides to play a little trick. He lies to Vern that Vivian never got over his leaving her, and that her constant bashing of him is a defense mechanism to ease her pain. Ralph suggests a group dinner where he can confront Viv and let her down easily (when in reality he just wants to see the look on her face when he suggests she grovel, knowing full well what it will do to her new marriage). Vern thinks its a great idea to try and smooth over the difficulties of the past and tells Viv they're going out to dinner that night. Viv is delighted, thinking he's finally remembered, until Loretta tells her otherwise. Now both women are determined to get revenge by pretending to be interested in each other's husbands, much to the surprise of Ralph and Vern!

1.05 - Sherman's Little Dividend

Sherman gets the wrong idea when he sees Viv knitting booties for Mrs. Valance's new baby. Unnerved by the prospect of having a younger sibling, he decides to live with his father next door. Viv is heartbroken when she finds out but doesn't know the reason because Sherman is too embarrassed to admit why. When he confides in Loretta, she goes all out in throwing a lavish baby shower, which certainly takes Viv, and especially Vern, by surprise. Fortunately, Mrs. Valance is only too happy to accept all the gifts once all is clear.

Brilliant! Though I would have thought Viv would have gotten the house by exercising "The Loophole in the Lease"!  Perhaps that explains Lucy Carmichael's abrupt departure for California.

And what about the day when Thelma Greene meets Mrs. Valence?

If this series accepts outside spec scripts.......

1.06  "Enid's Better Half...er...Three-Quarters"

The scandalous reason for Mooney's sudden departure to California is revealed when never-married Enid's significant other moves in with the Bunsons and it turns out to be Irma Mooney (Jody Gilbert) who takes one look at their room and declares "The chintz drapes have GOT to go."  The Bunsons find their grocery bill skyrocketing with "the bottomless pit" demanding 6 meals a day and soon tire of her bomastic ways such as her taking over the living room for her weekly karate class.  But the situation reaches a boiling point when Irma pours herself a cup of coffee and Viv says "I'd like a cup of coffee too" prompting  Irma to reply sarcastically  "But of course!...." and so on.

GUEST CAST: Irma's karate students:

Jane Corey..... Nancy Kulp,

Dora Dunbar... Reta Shaw,

Irma's sister.... Minerva Urecal,

Kathleen...........Kathleen Freeman

Mr. Bundy.........Jay Novello

I'm basing this off of the alternate season 4 thread we did a few years ago. That's where I got a lot of the cast choices. I believe one episode on that thread specified Mrs. Valance as Thelma's twin sister.

I thought I remembered some reference about that (not a detail you would miss).  We really should be writing these all down and maybe put them in book form some day!  (Weirder things have been published.)

1.07  "No More Triple Vacations"

Viv's old boyfriend Eddie stops by and to show he had has no hard feelings, he delivers to Viv and Vern a new coffee table to replace the one he put so many cigarette burns on.  Then he invites "the most ideal couple I have ever known" to spend a weekend at his mountain cabin.  Unfortunately each couple thinks he's referring to them and are thrilled to finally spend some time away from the other two.  They all arrive at the cabin at different times, but it takes a while for everyone to realize everyone else is there. And when it's discovered that the cabin has only two bedrooms, an argument over accommodations ensues until it's decided the only fair solution is for the women to get one room and the men the other.  The men's bedroom consists of a twin bed and a hammock.  Unfortunately Vern gets the short straw and makes several attempts to mount the rickety thing.  The women's bedroom was set up for kids and has one sleeping structure: a 4-decker bunk bed.  No argument as to who gets the lower bunk: Irma, who soon tires of the debate about who else gets what and tosses Enid up to the 2nd bunk. Hoisting Loretta up to the third tier throws out her back, so poor Viv is on her own.  She considers just sleeping in the car until she spies a mini-trampoline in the kids toy closet and some stilts propped up in the corner.  Which will Viv choose?

General Store owner: Hank Patterson.

1.08 - Viv's Wedding Redux

Viv and Vern receive their wedding photos and are horrified to discover that all of them are either out of focus or cut everybody's heads off. Cursing the day she agreed to let Lucy's cousin, Melvin, be their wedding photographer, Viv sets about renting the country club in order to recreate all the wedding moments. But when none of the other people in the wedding party prove available (including, of course, Lucy and Mr. Mooney) she must settle for slapping a red wig on Irma and using a strong filter on the lens.

1.09 - Mooney's Three Sons

Still reeling over their separation, Mr. Mooney sends Bob, Ted and Arnold back east to try and persuade their mother to come back and be a family again. Although she puts on a big act in front of the boys that she and Enid are very happy together, privately she finally confesses to Viv that it was all a charade in order to get old Theodore to pay more attention to her and stop making mean-spirited cracks about her height and (lack of) hair to his gossipy secretary. Enid overhears, and in a jealous rage swipes some of Ted's mushrooms and laces dinner with them. Soon everyone's on a wild trip, which ends with Mrs. Mooney, convinced she's Tinkerbell, trying to fly back to California by jumping off Vern and Viv's roof. Enid is arrested once a sobered up Viv realizes what happened, but not before she manages to give Irma a bounce in the breadbasket.
