The Lucy Show Season 3: Reviews and First Impressions!

Recommended Posts

Oh i understand about Danny, he was an aquired taste, but a sophistocated master at comedic interpretation that he showed in films and he brought a top notch performance level in his tv shows also. But i agree it must be the age thing with Ann, here she's playing a Countess and she is incredible, if this were today, she'd have won an Emmy for those guest shots, she was superb! She can rise up to Lucy's level, playing drunk, showing the common touch behind her new Countess status and that old chestnut about Lucy getting better if she liked or even loved the person she was working with and this case Lucy excells as she is working with a very old friend, a former co worker, a woman she adores and a BIG FAT MOVIE STAR of the first caliber. I assume Ann did not want to become a second banana on a TV show with her history in motion pictures or maybe the cheap producer could not afford her, but Ann should have been Viv's replacement, i can't think of any star who could have matched Lucy's stature, with the possible exception of Eve Arden who could have replaced Viv as effectively as Ann did.

I hear you Claude and I totally see where you are coming from, but maybe it's just me but Ann Sothern plays the most annoying drunk I've seen in a long time! LOL! Maybe cause she reminds me of someone that I don't like, or someone that's really annoying, maybe that's where it's from. Who knows?

Ok, beau finally brought me mine today. He says the one he got from Amazon had to be returned, all discs on it were defective. He went to four stores in Toronto and found the ONE copy at the smallest store. I just played all the bonus features on the four discs and assured him THIS set is fine. Beautiful set up and presentation, exquisite copies, beautiful work guys!!!!! I have to say, the most beautiful and the most exciting thing to watch for me in years, Lucy wise, was that excellent footage of LUCY AT THE WORLD'S FAIR. We HAD a world's fair here in Montreal three years after the New York one Lucy attended and so i KNOW how much fun they can be, the atmosphere, the people from all over the world showing off their various cultures, it's like one giant multi cultural party where everybody has a great time seeing things they've never seen before, so i guess that's the reason i enjoyed it so much. I had no idea Lucy spent 14 hours going from place to place, non stop, the enthuseasm she showed, the honors she received, President of CBS, James Aubrey, whom she did not like i'm sure as he never bought her shows at Desilu, the Governor of New York kissing her on the lips, the crowds, it's been reported that Lucy got more fans turning up for her than any ten other celebrities put together. I cannot get over how much she seems to be enjoying herself, i can understand she must have looked upon it as a job, to promote her shows worldwide, but i can see also that she was floored by the fact that she was well known the world over and seeing thousands of people shower the love on her like that. I have to add that Hedda, De De and even Gary helped too, the outfits she wore were beautiful, especially the one she wore on The Danny Kaye show so we could see it in color, she looked sensational, the bags under her eyes only showing up in extreme close ups. I was thinking, did she always surround herself with old ladies like mom and Hedda to look younger by comparison? LOL! Anyhoo, what a pleasant surprise, Lucy enjoying herself, getting feted like the Queen of comedy she was for the world to enjoy, everybody helping her or paying tribute or just fawning over being in her presence, what a treat that whole film was.

What episode was it at the end of the "Menu montage" where Lucy is walking down the stairs in the dress and smiling? I saw every episode and that scene was not in any episode.

Also I love how they mention the Beatles every 5 minutes lolz! Because 1964 was when they came to America.

Another review stumbled upon! From some funky site I've never heard of before called "Inside Pulse".... and you can tell the reviewer isn't a huge "Lucy" fan but in the end, it's given a 4 out of 5 rating, so ....not all bad. Here it is:

At the height of their fame, Bud Abbott made more than Lou Costello. There was no jealousy in the pay difference. Why? Because Lou knew that there’s nothing harder than finding a great straight man in a comic duo. The straight man had to be convincing to an audience as to why they’d stick around with the funny guy. They weren’t merely schtick victims. Unfortunately Lucille Ball didn’t come to the same realization as Lou. For a dozen years she and Vivian Vance were the premiere female comic duo on I Love Lucy and The Lucy Show. Vivian looked like she’d get tempted by Lucy’s insane desires. When Vivian Vance expressed frustrations including traveling cross country to be with her husband, Lucy didn’t fight too hard to keep her a series regular. Ironically The Lucy Show: The Official Third Season covers Vivian’s slow move out of a fake house in Danfield, New York so she can stay in the real New York.

“Lucy and the Good Skate†returns the show to a family oriented story. Lucy wants mom time with daughter Chris (Candy Moore) so they strap on wheels for rollerskating. The problem comes later when Lucy can’t get the skates off. She’s got a dancing date lined up for the evening. There’s plenty of physical comedy as she can’t stop moving. However this season wouldn’t be about the kids. They’re also shuffled out of the scripts. “Lucy and the Plumber†begins the experiments of life without Vivian. Lucy needs to get her sink pipes fixed and hires a plumber. Turns out the guy looks just like Jack Benny. He always feels cursed by his lookalike face since nobody takes him serious as a violinist. Lucy enters him on a TV talent contest only to watch things fall apart. Another famous face makes a cameo as his assistant. What’s strangely interesting is Benny’s character is called Harry Tuttle. Sound familiar? That was the name of Robert De Niro’s plumber character in Brazil. Was Terry Gilliam referencing The Lucy Show in his dystopian vision of the future?

“Lucy Goes to Vegas†wasn’t filmed on location. Lucy and Viv spend their time in Sin City taking advantage of the free food at a casino’s lobby. They’re staying at a fleabag motel around the corner. To get high roller freebies, they dress up as rich women who are fighting the urge to gamble big. The pit bosses keep greasing them up until they have to take to the tables or blow their disguises. The duo is at their finest as they pull off their nutty scheme. “Lucy Meets Danny Kaye†has her force herself onto the star in order to score tickets for his show. He can’t help her, but he can hire her to be a background extra. Can she really not be the focus of the show?

“Lucy and the Monsters†is a creepy affair. Lucy and Viv go see The Eggplant That Ate Philadelphia. Lucy is so frightened afterward that she has to share a bed with Vivian. She ends up having a nightmare with Mr. Mooney (Gail Gordon) as Count Dracula and Sid Haig (Devil’s Rejects) as the Mummy. Amazing that the network censors had no problem with letting Lucy and Viv curl in up in bed together. Years earlier they forced Lucy and Ricky to sleep in twin beds on I Love Lucy. Lucy clutches a massive tent stake while next to her bedmate. This is almost an episode of The L Word. Imagine how Lucy and Viv would react to seeing Hostel or Human Centipede. They’d have a nightmare about being surgically connected to Mr. Mooney.

Since Vivian was away for a few episodes this season, there’s a four episode arc involving the Countess Framboise (Ann Sothern). “Lucy and the Countess†has her arrival. Turns out that this royal woman was Lucy’s childhood friend. When the Count dies, she returns home to stay with Lucy. Turns out the Countess isn’t rich, but Mr. Mooney thinks she’s loaded. She keeps up appearances in hopes that she can make a dime with her title. The issue with the Countess is how she makes Lucy the second banana. Sothern allows her character to be the queen of the scene. There are moments when Lucy is the one replacing Vivian in the duo action. The Countess did come back for a few more episodes in season four.

“Lucy and the Disc Jockey†is the final time Lucy and Vivian were roomies. Lucy forces Vivian to wake up early to guess the mystery sound on a radio show. They tear apart the kitchen in hopes of discovering the noise. This leads to the destruction of a major appliance, but they get the answer. Even though they win, only Lucy arrives at the radio station to collect the prize. However there is another winner. The disc jockey (One Day At a Time’s Pat Harrington) sets up a tie breaker. Ultimately Lucy gets to guest DJ with Harrington having to leave her in charge of the radio station. Chaos ensues. There’s an audio cameo from Bing Crosby. Lucy goes completely solo for the second half of the show. There’s no emotional farewell or even one last comedy routine before the end credits roll.

The end of Lucy and Viv as a comedy duo wasn’t nearly a jolt like the break up of Abbott and Costello. The fact that Viv popped up as a guest star in later episodes didn’t make it feel so traumatic. But it’s easy to see that Lucy was missing Viv on her show. She lacked that cohort in crazed plans. The show stopped being about two single moms. We just got Lucy versus Mr. Mooney with plenty of star power, Oddly enough, the ratings rose with the cast change. The Lucy Show: The Official Third Season gives us the duo’s last year as constant companions.

The Lucy Show: The Official Third Season displays a series in transition. Vivian Vance reduces her appearances as she phases to a guest star role. Lucy spends more screen time with famous guest stars. Mr. Mooney keeps up his tight economic control over Lucy. Think of this not as Vivian’s farewell, but saying “We can still be friends.

I loved "Lucy The Good Skate" especially the part on which Lucy kept hitting the tray of food that Sid was carrying.

I loved "Lucy And Winter Sports" especially when Mr. Mooney attempted to teach Lucy how to ski. We find out that Mr. Mooney doesn't like his mother-in-law.

I loved "Lucy Gets Amnesia" especially when she really gets amnesia.

I loved "Lucy And The Great Bank Robbery" especially the scene in the bank when she interrupts the robbers from robbing and the scene when she is hiding the loot in her clothes from the robbers.

I loved "Lucy, The Camp Cook" especially Lucy and Viv destroying the breakfast and the kitchen. I loved Harvey Korman's meltdown scene with Viv and Lucy.

I can't wait to see the rest of the discs in their entirety

WOW, great review, i only disagree with the part where he says Lucy did not do much to keep Viv on the show. Viv's agent demanded equal things to Lucy and the Desilu people told Lucy she wanted the moon and should not try to keep her with those crazy high demands.

I've watched them out of order and am still only half way through!!! But enjoying them so much more than I thought I would. And as always, they simply look AMAZING!! Hard to believe these shows are over 50 years old!! Whew!

And I can't believe the great World's Fair footage -- simply wundaful.

Tom & company have done it again!! I am SOOOOOO looking forward to Season Four....even though I really miss Viv once she's gone...... :sigh:

I'm watching them IN ORDER and will be looking at the Camp Cook one after the news, you're right, i never thought i'd enjoy them so much either, but they are so beautiful clear and damned funny. My plumber ep was missing some bits because of satellite problems when i reorded my copy so it was nice to see it COMPLETE. The World's Fair footage was just incredible, you can feel how excited she is for just being there and how the hell she kept her energy level up to the sky after a long day like that, well, she had some good genes is all i can say. YES, everybody who collaborated on these should be commended for the great job they did, A G A I N !

Me, too! I've never seen it.

I forgot also, Lucy in Nashville too. Lucy in London is a tour de force for her, totaly different from anything she had done up till then, a bit more sophisticated, more musical than funny and some people dun't like the Anthony Newly medley at the end, in concert, but he is definitely an aquired taste, very unusual nasal voice but he's singing absolutely terrific songs. This was envisioned as a series of specials set in various cities round the world but Paris, their first intended stop did not respond well to her, France has always had this hatred of anything NOT FRENCH, they do not like their culture to be overtaken by any other. So Cleo set her sights on London instead and i think she did a terrific job, it was a great show but Lucy's audience wanted slpatick Lucy in her usual haunts, so the ratings were not as great as expected so no more specials followed. Such a shame as it would have been a hoot to see Lucy in Rio, or even the poor man's Paris, my Montreal, or Sydney in Australia and many other possibilities with Lucy exploring the various cultures around the world. I'd make you a copy of mine Amanda but it's such a lousy copy, colors all faded from constant recopying. BUT, if it's not released which i'm sure it will be, i would make copies for everybody anyway.

The AMNESIA ep with Vinnie Myers, was the umbrella GREEN to you, it was BLUE on my set, should i adjust my colors, everything else was right on.

Little more bragging about my Celoron hometown....

As we ALL know, Lucille just loved speaking about her 'friends' back in NY on her various 't.v. programs'.

Vincent Myers was a childhood boyfriend (pre-age 12, I would guess; not sure about that, however) and was personally invited by L. Pauline Lopus, at Lucille's suggestion, along with my father and his best friend (that I know of the invites), as well as many other local friends, to the Reception held at the-then Little Theater of Jamestown, Fairmount Avenue, Jamestown, in 1956, when she and Desi were in town for the premiere of Forever Darling.

Long story short: she, on being re-introduced to Vinnie, laughed so hard, rumor has it she had tears in her eyes, since Vinnie never grew much, and of course, Lucille was shorter then, too; rumored also - Desi supposedly said to him: "And....you're the one I've been jealous of all these years!!!!" Thought you all might enjoy that story that came home with my father!!!!

Happy Holidays ALL! MAY THEY BE YOUR BEST EVER!!!! JK

JK

And YOU did not go and meet Lucy yourself? Were you at least at that parade?

LUCY IN LONDON should be part of season 5 hopefully - it will help the sales as a lot will have all but one of these episodes on PD format (DVD, low quality broadcast TV, VHS)

We may all have these already either taped off NAN or TBS or whatever outlet we could get them on or those countless cheaply done public domain DVD releases but after being "spoiled" by the WUNDAFUL CBS TLS and MPI HL releases where the episodes are archived and presented to us in their 26 or so minute entirety and not chopped to smithereens, as well as remastered gorgeous, gloriously almost Technicolor looking pristine prints, WHO CARES if we've already got them???

We sure don't have 'em like we're gonna get 'em!!! And all I can think of to say to that is .....WOOHOO!!!!

And Lucy in Nashville for season six then? Or as an extra on a Here's Lucy release maybe?

I hate to say it as much as I'd like a copy myself, but I just don't see LIN happening, between the fact it wasn't an LBP and all the music rights and clearances (equals lot of $$$$!) issues.....but believe me, this is one instance where I certainly hope I'm proved to be wrong!!!

I agree entirely, and all serious Lucy fans should pick up ALL seasons of ALL her shows, but the casual fan may not, having spent 2 or 3 dollars (or UK pounds) on the PD crap. So LUCY IN LONDON will hopefully persuade them to buy the official season 5
