I actually meant to post that remix, Harry. Love it!

Claude, I know. Tis shameful to not know Streisand's work, especially as a gay man. But What's Up Doc? is making it's way to the top of my movie queue so maybe that'll be a kickstart.

You ought to be so ashamed of yourself there fella! LOL! WUD is a cute comedy but you have to see her tour de force in Funny Girl, her being miscast but still singing great in Dolly, On a clear day you can see forever, and then her dramas The Way we were, Yentl i just could not get into but the songs from it she has made me love, Prince of Tides, and a few others . . .

OMG, "Doc" is hilarious!! And what a cast: a young and gawjuss Ryan "I hit on my own daughter at my life partner's FUNERAL" O'Neal and the amazing Madeline (I don't care if Lucy "fired" her or not!) Kahn, in what was I believe her very first film.

Enjoy! professor.JPG

Besides Merman, the actress I would have loved to have seen as Rose is Ann Sothern. She did it in stock around 1967 and received raves.

A recording of Ann Sothern in "Gypsy" exists, or at least it did at one time. She is quoted in her bio referring to it.

Ann won raves as "Mame" on stage in Honolulu that had an extended run in the summer of 1969--which she also retained an audio recording of. Yes, they probably had to reinforce the moon, but I'm sure she was great.

Kaye Ballard did "Gypsy"---as did Betty Hutton and Dolores Gray.

There were so many actresses who could do Gypsy (and Mame) justice in the 60s and now all we have is

Barbara "I had a dream; a dream about ME" Streisand.

I hope those audio recordings of Ann are still around.

Kaye Ballard did two stock productions of Gypsy. In one her Herbie was Jack Cassidy (who seems too debonair for the role); in the other, Gavin MacLeod. On YouTube, there are some audio clips of Delores Gray doing some of the numbers from the show at some kind of tribute to Sondheim or one of the other creators. There are also clips of Merman in the original production. I know nothing has ever made its way around the bootleg trading circuit, but I wonder, if somewhere, there is some kind of audio recording of Lucy's performance in Wildcat. You think some Lucy fan would have brought a tape recorder to the Imperial Theatre in 1961.

The Dainty June in Betty Hutton's production was...Bernadette Peters!

I think we would have an easier time listing actresses who DIDN'T play Mame than did!

The Imperial? I thought it was the ALVIN?

Several full show audio recordings have surfaced from around the same time as Wildcat: Merman's Gypsy, Mary's Sound of Music, so I'm convinced that one exists somewhere of Wildcat, either audio or film clips. (Laura: ASK LUCIE!!) Especially since it was a Desilu Production and "Lucy Goes to Broadway" was being planned. Not everyone involved in that production could make it back to New York to see the show.

Most of these recordings were made from house mics so the fidelity is not great, but they're historically fascinating. Some recordings were made from the house sound system when the actors started wearing wireless mics...I've heard Hepburn's Coco and it sounds great. I don't think Wildcat was miked.

I'm not one of those that thinks Lucy was to old for Mame, but at 61 (during the time of filming) she is the oldest actress to do Mame professionally, of the ones I know about. Ann Sothern was a close second at 60. Bea Lilly may have been older than Lucy when she played Auntie Mame, but if so, only slightly. I'll bet there were a lot of middle-aged actress who were none to happy that Lucy got the film role. According to Carole Cook's bio, she is the only one to have done the play and the musical professionally! Seems like someone else would have.

Oh, Mame, Mame, Mame! Such a disappointment for Lucy (and Lucy supporters). I'm hoping that someone clever and creative will take the movie into their computer, re-edit the thing and do some severe enhancement to Lucy's singing tracks and maybe even "un-gruff" her speaking voice that's too harsh in some scenes. If you listen to a musicals even as late as "The Music Man", when the actor's voices switch from speaking to the pre-recorded intros to their songs, the fidelity changes dramatically to beef up their vocals. They just weren't doing this in 1974, but they should have made an exception. Even in Angela's cast recording there's so much reverb than Angela's voice continues a full 2 seconds after she's done singing. I'm also not one of those CONVINCED that Angela could have made a go of the "Mame" movie, at least as it was directed here.......(didn't mean to ramble on....and veer so far off-topic)

This is completely off our original topic, but I was just thinking of the other Lucy related people who played Mame at some point:

Ginger Rogers (London)

Ann Sothern (Hawaii)

Ann Miller (final Broadway Mame)

Carole Cook (Stock in the '80s with Betsy Palmer as Vera and Lorna Luft as Gooch)

Kitty Carlisle (Kenley Players in 1978 - she was 68. Someone alert Rex Reed. I believe 70 year old Don Ameche was Beau.)

Celeste Holm (Angie's Broadway vaction replacement, did the tour)

Janis Paige (Broadway replacement)

Edie Adams (stock)

Shelia MacRae (stock)

Ruta Lee

Morgan Brittany (tour in the '90s)

Others who played "Auntie Mame"

Rosalind Russell

Eve Arden (tour, she wanted to buy the rights to Patrick Dennis' novel, but found out Roz beat her to it)

Constance Bennett (tour)

Carole Cook (stock. She's done both versions.)

At least four Stage Door cast members played Mame Dennis (Lucy, Ginger, Ann, and Eve - the latter the straight play). I know Katharine Hepburn was on the list OF possibilities with every other actress in the world when they were casting the musical. I think Gail Patrick would have been good in Auntie Mame.

Kaye Ballard was a finalist for the original Broadway production, but was told nobody would ever believe she resided at 3 Beekman Place. It was then down to Angela Lansbury and Delores Gray. You-know-who got it.

There are tons of other notable Mames through the years (Beatrice Lillie, Greer Garson, Elaine Stritch, Susan Hayward, Gypsy Rose Lee - bringing us back on topic. lol), are there any others with Lucy connections?

Of course she wouldn't, she was a nobody in films, not the BIG NAME needed to carry the film, and she was BIG on Broadway but musicals were not at that time.

I just thought of a Mame who is even older than Lucy and Kitty Carlisle. Lee Merriwether played Mame in 2009 at the age of 74. My favorite quote regarding her casting was "Poor Patrick. He's going to be orphaned again."

Jesus Christ, this obsession these morons had with the age of our heroine, you love Auntie Mame BECAUSE she's been around a long time and has done it all, that's why she's so much fun to be around. A younger woman while more attractive would not have been seasoned in the ways of the world which is what we loved best about our Auntie Mames. And would both of you please stop with the talk about veering off subject, when the thread gets as interesting as this one is and it's still about Lucy, who the hell cares if it's not right on topic.

I'll check a few trading circles and see if I come across Ann Sothern's Gypsy or Mame. Does anyone know if the recordings were done by a fan or the theater?

I had the cast album of Wildcat with Lucy in my grubby little hands in a store one time decades ago, maybe 20 years ago or less and i decided i did not want to spend that much money, i would get it the following week, of course, it was gone then.

marionstrong.gif Oh gawd that visual has got me on the FLOOR!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I do love Ann though so don't take that the wrong way! ;)

I dunno ....wasn't Cher rumored to do Mame for television forever, with the same producers (Zadan & Meron) who did Bette's version of Gypsy for TV?? I think she could still pull it off and I think it'd be more fun to boot! I think Miss Funny Goil is a little bit long in the tooth to pull off a thirtysomethingish Mama Rose. Just sayin'.

A few years ago the Lucy-Desi Museum said that they had unearthed Lucy's "audition" tape for Wildcat and were digitizing it and adding it to their collection. I'm assuming that this was an audio demo recording of the songs made prior to rehersals. They never gave any more information.

I think it made it to the Museum director's car trunk as he was escorted out a couple of years ago.

Re: The A G E problem, . . . remember the scene in Funny Girl when Fanny Bryce is told about her husband's shady doings as she is about to meet the press and Streisand goes into this childish character, well, she's gonna use that scene to carry off the role in Gypsy. And i said the same thing earlier about that great line Neil had about reinforcing the moon for Sothern, just a riot, i agree wholeheartedly. Beautiful Ann always had a problem with her weight, taking a Lucy show break for a bowl full of ice cream with cookies crushed over it, because she "needed a little sugar" for energy, LOL!

Actresses mentioned for a new movie or TV version of Mame in the past 20 years include Streisand, Cher, Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, Queen Latifah, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The Barbra/Cher one was the longest lasting rumor. Barbra allegedly angered Jerry Herman when she wanted to turn It's Today! into a solo just for her and cut the chorus. The other rumor was that Barbra was going to direct Cher in the TV movie (produced by Zadan and Meron), but nothing ever came of that. That was around the time ABC did a bunch of musical remakes like Annie, Cinderella, and The Music Man.

Right. And I'm sorry now that the Cher version never got made. Would have been FAB!
