Shirley Temple, the dimpled, curly-haired child star who sang, danced, sobbed and grinned her way into the hearts of Depression-era moviegoers, has died at 85.

Temple, known in private life as Shirley Temple Black, died at her home near San Francisco.

A talented and ultra-adorable entertainer, Shirley Temple was America's top box-office draw from 1935 to 1938, a record no other child star has come near. She beat out such grown-ups as Clark Gable, Bing Crosby, Robert Taylor, Gary Cooper and Joan Crawford.

Well Brock, we remember her most as a kid, a cute little girl who did these great movies, we always remembered her that way, didn't matter if she was a U N Ambassador, to most of us, it was always that little girl who got a tiny little Oscar and brought huge audiences to theaters to see the talented kid.  Used to LOVE her movies, but what did they show as her obit picture, that's right, the cute little girl with a head full of curls who entertained millions with her innocent little movies.  Remember Carol Burnett imitating her?

She's eternally young in our memories based on her most successful movies. I just watched the biopic Disney made about her a few months ago. Learned a lot about her life as a child. I'll have to track down a copy of the book now. Maybe it will be reprinted in light of her passing. There's bound to be a renewed interest in her life and work.

Is it just me, or is the entire concept of Shirley Temple being dead just seem stranger than it is for other celebrities? lol

So true. it's like when Liz Cooper said, "The last time I felt so old was when Shirley Temple got married."

I love that ME-TV tribute.

Here's Shirley's Kennedy Center Honors salute:
