C L A U D E
But she'd have special lyrics, THAT'S HOW YOUNG I FEEL WHEN I'M FEELING THE YOUNG CHORUS BOYS . . . That was a hilarious story Harry, thanks for sharing, LOL! I'll betcha there's loads more with that character, LOL!

Brock
That Elaine-At-School video is the most delightful thing I've seen in a long time. Loved it! ... and I would kill for an Grade 1 production of Company in its entirety! lol
C L A U D E
I laughed when I saw Elaine in a show at the White House for Obama, she screws up the words to I'm Still Here at least three times and stops, the piano player has to help her out even yelling the lyrics at one point. To be fair it does seem to have lots more lyrics than the version we're used to. But my point is, she's so great, that the audience doesn't care, her personality alone shines through, who cares if the words are right as long as they're belted out by such a gifted entertainer. Mmadluv7
The performance that sold me was of her doing "He had refinement" i forget which show that was apart of- but ugh- sheer genius at how she broke the lyric down and made it believable and easy to identify with. Brock
Another great tribute from Entertainment Weekly of her Emmy-winning portrayal of Colleen Donaghy: "This is supposed to be a hospital -- not a Japanese internment camp (I volunteered at during the war!)." FreddieMertz
I love how Elaine sounds horrible and gets words wrong but everyone still loves her. That's true star quality.

HarryCarter
I saw Elaine at New York's Town Hall in 2011. This performance is covered in her documentary. She forgot the words to almost all the songs and was terrific. I think if it were pretty much anyone else, the audience would have felt uncomfortable. Not with Elaine. C L A U D E
Yes, but did they never consider the use of CUE CARDS? Even Sinatra used them at the end of HIS career.
HarryCarter
Yes, but did they never consider the use of CUE CARDS? Even Sinatra used them at the end of HIS career. Elaine refused any type of TelePrompTer or earpiece.
C L A U D E
Well, maybe her eyes were gone also, saw her with humongous glasses a la Lucy lately. I can understand the earpieces annoying her when trying to sing but the teleprompter would have been a good idea.
Luvsbway
When she was doing night music I heard reports of her forgetting lines and calling for them. She was on point the night I saw her. I'm Still Here is another one that many people can trip up on. Elaine Paige was talked about forgetting lyrics too but she was on when I saw Follies. HarryCarter
Stritch knew all her lines when I saw her in A Little Night Music. Paige got through all of I'm Still Here when I saw Follies too.

Lucyilove
I love the story Michael Feinstein tells on Elaine Stritch. Seems Michael took his eightysomething father to an Elaine Stritch performance (or she went to one of his) and they hit it off swimmingly, then Elaine calls Michael the next day and tells him how wonderful his dad is and Michael tells her "Thanks, Mom likes him too" which is followed by a pause and Elaine responding, "Damn, I was hoping she was dead." C L A U D E
LOL! That's typical Elaine, LOL! I want to make it clear that I had no idea Elaine had had all these issues with forgetting lines. When I saw her do it three times at that White House show, I was stunned by it, didn't know it had happened frequently before.

When I saw her do it three times at that White House show, I was stunned by it, didn't know it had happened frequently before. I don't think Elaine ever had trouble with lines (even during her drinking years) until she reached her mid-80s. I think her diabetes played a part in it too. It is covered in great detail in the excellent documentary about her released earlier this year.
C L A U D E
Could be, my aunt who suffers from diabetes told me that when her blood sugar is too low, she gets disoriented and forgets things when speaking until she remedies it by having something sweet.
