tjw
Just received a nice letter from one of Doris Singleton's relatives, Olive Isaacs, announcing the formation of a new Doris Singleton Scholarship at The American Ballet Theatre in New York City. Doris herself got her "start" in the ballet; in 1937, at age 18, she -- then Dorothea Singleton-- received the rare honor of becoming a member of the first corps de ballet of the then brand new ABT (then called simply the Ballet Theatre). To honor Doris' memory and celebrate the origins of her 75+ year career, her family has set up a scholarship! It hopes to raise $30,000, which will provide funding for 4 young dancers who are the same age Doris was when she first studied at the Ballet Theatre. Anyone interested in making a donation in memory of Doris can do so using credit card via the internet at https://support.abt.org/donatenow (under "additional information" please be sure to select "Yes" to donate in memory of Doris. One can also contribute via check... The mailing address is: The American Ballet Theatre Attn: Major Gifts The Peter T. Joseph Studios The Lawrence A. Wien Center for Dance and Theatre 890 Broadway, 3rd Floor New York City, New York 10003-1278 (Again, be sure to include a note, designating your contributions are for the Doris Singleton Scholarship.) The ABT is a 501c3 charitable organization, so your gifts to the Doris Singleton Scholarship is eligibale as a tax deductible contribution to the extent allowed by the IRS. Here's a scan of a photo (of young Doris) which Ms. Isaacs included on her letter --
