I Love Lucy: The Soap Opera

Recommended Posts

What if I Love Lucy hadn't been a sitcom, but another soap opera? What plots might we have seen?

- Lucy's makeup to hide bruises doesn't fool Ethel, who confronts Ricky and winds up with a shiner too.

- That thumping noise from Mrs. Trumbull's apartment upstairs...it sounds like her bed! And where's Fred when all this is going on? Ethel suspects the worst!

- Lots of catfights with Carolyn in the lily pond. And the art studio. And the mud pile. And the fabric store...

- Ricky gets amnesia and thinks it's 1933 again, and that he's still dating Carlotta Romero.

- Ethel's evil twin, Roberta Louise Potter, comes to New York, locks Ethel in the freezer and takes Ethel's place!

- Why does Little Ricky look more like Charlie Appleby than Big Ricky? And why does Little Stevie's baby-talk have an accent?

- Just why did Fred and Barney break up? And why is Barney really back in town after all these years?

- Exactly what caused Fred to leave his autograph book in Indiana? Or did Ethel FORCE him to leave it behind?

- Those impersonations Lucy does. When will she cross the line and go too far? Why, when she takes the place of Mamie Eisenhower of course!

- Plus, Lucy conspires with Hedda Hopper to de-rail Ricky's career and bolster her own! But will a career compensate for Ross Elliot's constant pimping of blonde starlets on her husband?

She has only hazy memories of what lead up to the pregnancy but has repeated dreams that what something very unusual happened. After Ethel spreads the news Lucy is pregnant, all of a sudden that crotchety old Mrs. Trumbull suddenly starts becoming overly solicitous, appearing at their door with casseroles and desserts to keep Lucy healthy during the pregnancy. Lucy starts to think something is amiss. After all, the stuff Mrs. Trumbull keeps bringing by -- made with groceries from Mr. Ritter -- always taste a little bit off to her, while Ricky, Fred and Ethel gobble everything up. Lucy keeps putting things out her mind, but becomes more and more paranoid as the due date approaches, but Ricky keeps telling her that everything is fine. Ethel does her best to soothe her. Fred suggests if she keeps it up, they'll have to send her to the booby hatch. Finally, to clear her mind, she decides to go downtown shopping, leaving the newborn little Ricky in the care of Mrs. Trumbull. Her suspicions are realised, however, when she returns to find Mrs. Trumbull, leading Ricky, the Mertzes and Mr. Ritter performing a very unusual ritual with her child.
