Lucy Ricardo, Mob Kingpin

Recommended Posts

We could take this even farther and say that the later incarnations of Lucy shows are just Lucy Ricardo having to move and change her identity again.

When Mary Jane Lewis, old friend of Lucy Carmichael's, showed up in Lucy Carter's life, potentially blowing her witness-protection cover, they had to think quick and perform a lobotomy.  This would explained why Mary Jane got daffier as the years rolled on.

With each season she just got loonier and loonier culminating in her "I have a inner glow" recitation in "MJ's Boyfriend".

Speaking of MJ, MeTV is running Our Miss Brooks and in an episode shown out of order from late in the 2nd season, she appears as Daisy Enright, Connie's rival for Mr. Boyton's attention.  She's much more sophisticated: somewhere between Cynthia Harcourt and Betty Ramsey.

I always liked Mary Jane's appearances as Daisy Enright. She did haughty snobs so well. I easily forget it's the same actress who was so daffy on Lucy's later shows.

Mary Jane made far more appearances on the radio version than the television version, I believe. I haven't seen much of the tv show but IMDb credits her for only four episodes. Is that accurate?

"Boyfriend" had to be MJL's finest hour, at least "Lucy"-related; haven't seen OMB in years and don't have any "stashed" (ahem) to refer to without further internet digging, but I may... but reading these recent posts just reminds me how WUNDAFUL and perhaps underappreciated her contributions were to the Lucy canon... do we know if she was ever even nominated for anything, be it Emmy, Golden Globe or any other award??

Well one thing's for sure and heartening and that's that Lucy herself MUST have seen MJ's gifts or she NEVER would have lasted as a co-star/guest performer over three decades.  :D

My MFH knowledge is slim at best, did she ever appear on that? If not then was her appearance on ILL the first time she and Lucy worked together?? And aren't we thankful, whenever the first time was, that they "clicked"! :HALKING:

Yes, Mary Jane appeared in one episode, "Liz's Radio Script," as Margaret Baldwin, an old college friend of George's who judged the radio play contest Liz entered. This was the first time she and Lucy had worked together. Mary Jane herself didn't recall this when interviewed for "The Lucy Book" and had to be reminded.
