I'm so glad the Academy gave him his Honourary Oscar while they still had the chance. I may watch 12 Angry Men or Before The Devil Knows You're Dead tonight.

Sidney Lumet, director of classic films including Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, and Network, has died at 86, the New York Times is reporting.

The newspaper said his stepdaughter confirmed the death, and said the cause was lymphoma. He died at his home in Manhattan.

Lumet's film-directing career began with 12 Angry Men in 1957 and spanned six decades, ending with the 2007 film Before the Devil Knows You're Dead.

He received best director Academy Award nominations for 12 Angry Men, 1975's Dog Day Afternoon, 1976's Network and 1982's The Verdict, but went away empty-handed each time.

However, Lumet was given an honorary Oscar in 2005 for what the The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences called "brilliant services to screenwriters, performers and the art of the motion picture."

Ah yes, the famous New York director whose work was excellent but not as acknowledged by Hollywood as it should have because he was based in NY, so unfair, his work was real and gritty and never looked fake like many Hollywood films. I shall watch one of my all time favorites Prince of the City with Treat Williams giving the performance of a lifetime and maybe The Verdict afer that, Paul Newman's best work. In a career loaded with BEST WORK.
