Press about last night's event:

Paley Center Recognizes Hispanic Achievement In TV, And It’s About Time

NEW YORK — The Paley Center for Media hosted a first of its kind tribute to Hispanic achievement on television Wednesday night, bringing together the biggest Latino stars in Spanish and English-language television at the Cipriani Wall Street.

The event honored Hispanic contributions in telenovelas, comedy, news, drama and televised sports and music events with video supercuts from the Paley archive’s Hispanic collection.

“It’s really hard to believe that this type of tribute has never happened until tonight,” Gloria Estefan said on stage, after she and husband Emilio took the stage at the beginning of the night. “I don’t know what took so long, but the important thing is that... [the] Paley Center is stepping up big time and paying respect to a community that has been changing the television art for decades. We’re finally getting our dues.”

Other notable guests and presenters included America Ferrera, Don Francisco, George Lopez, Lana Parilla, Edward James Olmos and Jimmy Smits. Lucie Arnaz, daughter of Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball (“I Love Lucy”), also took the stage in a special moment honoring her father’s legendary career on television.

“Many other talented people were making strides in television when [Lucille and Desi] both started, but mixed with her divinely inspiring comedic knowhow and some of the best writers on the planet was dad’s heritage, which actually was one of the magic bullets that set this show apart,” Lucie Arnaz said in a speech honoring her father. “Like most [Latinos] he was inventive, intuitive, tenacious, courageous and, really, really funny.”

America Ferrera and comedian George Lopez offered the biggest laughs of the night when the two got on stage to introduce Hispanic contributions to comedy. Lopez went off-script to say, “we must all prevent Donald Trump from becoming president of the United States,” a comment which received enthusiastic cheers and applause from the audience.

And after a slew of off-hand jokes, Lopez did take a moment to celebrate Arnaz’s contributions to comedy with a personal anecdote.

“Bob Hope once told me that Desi Arnaz was the most underrated, underestimated, most brilliant person that he had ever met in show business,” Lopez told the audience. “But because he had an accent they thought he was intelligent. But Bob Hope told me that Desi Arnaz changed TV back then and is still changing TV today.”

On the red carpet, Cuban singer Gloria Estefan had shared a similar sentiment when discussing Arnaz’s work on “I Love Lucy.”

“For me it’s always going to be Desi Arnaz and the ‘Lucy’ show because I came here when I was 2 years old from Cuba, and I remember it was a perfectly natural thing to hear Desi Arnaz singing in Spanish music from my land.” Estefan said. “It wasn’t a weirdness, it was like everybody was tuning in, everybody was loving the show, and I saw myself reflected. So that was a wonderful thing to see early on. I didn’t realize at the time how unique that was and how it was going to be a long time before we saw anything like that again, if ever.”

Another big moment of the night was a small tribute to Mario “Don Francisco” Kreutzberger, who hosted the Saturday variety show “Sabádo Gigante” for 53 years. The Chilean TV legend received two standing ovations and shared a story of the first time he saw a television set after moving to New York City to study to become a men’s clothing designer.

“When I put it on, I was amazed,” Kreutzberger, who is set to host Telemundo’s “Don Francisco Te Invita,” said. “You were able to listen and to watch at the same time. That was my first contact with television. And I said my father is wrong, the future is not the men’s clothing designer, I think the future is being on television.”

The Paley Center announced it would repeat a similar tribute to Hispanic contributions in television on Oct. 24, at the Beverly Wilshire in Los Angeles.

Lucie Arnaz: Network Executives Still ‘Don’t Care’ About Diversity

The Paley Center for Media honored the contributions of hispanic Americans to the television landscape, for the first time, at Cipriani Wall Street in Manhattan on Wednesday night.

The night hit the rewind button on American television to 1950, when network executives at CBS told Lucille Ball that a show about a spunky redhead married to a Cuban band leader Desi Arnaz wasn’t believable. Undeterred, Arnaz put Ball into his act, and toured the country. Eventually, CBS brass got on board.

When executives wanted to shoot the show in New York on kinescope, Arnaz, who wanted to base the show in Los Angeles, again pushed back. He suggested three cameras, a live audience and a show shot on film. CBS reluctantly agreed and the result was “I Love Lucy,” a smash hit that pulled in more than 60 million viewers, invented the re-run and set the new standard for how situational comedies would be shot for the next 50 years.

“Inadvertently he introduced Latinos to America in such a compatible way,” Lucie Arnaz, the daughter of Desi Arnaz and Ball, told Variety. “[He introduced] the music, and showed we’re not scary and we don’t all sleep under a sombrero, [that] we can be intelligent, funny, loving parents, and working people, and that’s a big deal.”

Yet, 65 years later, all of the new shows ordered this fall at CBS, her parent’s first network, have a white male lead. In response to the news, Arnaz said: “They don’t care.”

“I don’t think they wake up every morning and think, how can we make these shows more diverse,” she added. “I don’t think that is the first thing on their mind; I think economics is the first thing on their mind.”

The evening’s program featured television clips from Hispanic actors, musicians, athletes, comedians and journalists who contributed across all types of media over the last 70 years, in the face of these challenges. To highlight these contributions, the Paley Center is unveiling a collection that includes more than 500 programs and segments, including the longest running variety show, Univision’s “Sabado Gigante,” clips from Desi Arnaz’s television work and sports highlights of great Hispanic athletes from Roberto Clemente to Pele.

Speaking on stage with actress America Ferrera, comedian and emcee for the evening George Lopez joked, “You better not have our shows on 8-track and DVDs, cabron, you better put them on digital like the white shows.”

Paley Center president and CEO Maureen J. Reidy assured that the archive has been carefully curated.

“Organizations have honored an individual or a particular show or series, but nobody has ever looked at the full history of Hispanics on television across all genres, and the Paley Center is uniquely positioned to tell this story,” said Reidy.

The evening hosted talents such as journalists Natalie Morales and Elizabeth Vargas; musicians Emilio and Gloria Estefan; NBA player Karl-Anthony Towns; and actors Luis Guzman, Edward James Olmos and Lana Parrilla. Executives, including Hearst’s executive vice chairman Frank A. Bennack Jr., NBC Universal International Group and Telemundo chairman Cesar Conde, Nielsen’s CEO Mitch Barns, SESAC’s CEO John Josephson, and Grupo Televisa exec VP Alfonso de Angoitia were also in the audience.

The Paley Center Honors Hispanic Achievements in TV

On Wednesday night The Paley Center for Media held a Tribute to Hispanic Achievements in Television at Cipriani Wall Street in Manhattan. TV Guide Magazine was a co-chair sponsor of the event.

It was a star-studded event that featured Gloria and Emilio Estefan, America Ferrera (Superstore), Jimmy Smits (24: Legacy), Luis Guzman (Code Black), Lana Parrilla (Once Upon a Time) and Carlos Valdes (The Flash).

Celebrating Hispanic culture on television, dating back to the ’50s with I Love Lucy star and television pioneer Desi Arnaz, the Paley Center officially launched the Hispanic Collection within the Paley Archive, the largest publicly accessible archive of TV programming in the nation. “The money raised for tonight has allowed us to create and launch the Hispanic collection, which is now a part of the Paley Archive, and right now we’re coming in around 550 programs and growing,’ said Maureen J. Reidy, Paley’s president & CEO (pictured above with the Estefans). "The energy and enthusiasm for this night is like nothing we’ve seen before."

The highlight of the night was a special tribute to Desi Arnaz by his daughter Lucie, which featured clips of him reading Little Red Riding Hood in Spanish, a salute to him on The Ed Sullivan Show and a young Lucie serenading him on The Mike Douglas Show.

“People know Desi Arnaz of course as one who broke barriers in front of the camera, but what so many don’t know is how he was a pioneer behind the camera,” Reidy said. “He was the first ever Latino to own his own production company, and also revolutionize the TV industry by creating the 3-camera model [for a live audience].”

Lucie was thrilled to be there to pay tribute to her father. "To be there for my dad, to be able to get up and say the words that I think he would want me to tell these people about why I think what he did worked, and why I thought he was special, that’s nice," she said. "It’s nice to be asked to say that in front of a lot of people, especially at the Paley Center."

Reidy referred to the evening as "historic" and "one of those events people talk about for years."

Added Valdes, who play tech wiz Cisco on The Flash: “This is a night where we get to celebrate, not just the achievements that Latinos have made in the realm of television, but also our forward movement, where we’re going from here and how we’re actively and accurately reflecting Latino influence in our society, and I think that’s incredibly important.”

The event was so successful that The Paley Center also announced a followup night showcasing Hispanic Achievements in Television that will take place in Beverly Hills, California on October 24.
