For goodness sakes, you'd think Time Life would let Vicki hand pick a few for once...

 

If only Red had been included, it would be THREE Fave Redheads. He certainly had his share of groovy guest stars- heck, I'm pretty sure the Jackson 5 made their TV debut on the show- possibly the Rolling Stones, too. I think his writers were at least a little better than Bob Hope's. Oh well. Probably tied up in legal red tape.

 

I wonder how much of this set is new and how much is just compiled from earlier releases. The fact that Andy Williams picked his personal favorites makes me think that they're just repackaging an older DVD. Either that or they're using Ouija boards at headquarters.

 

This makes me think of when I was little and they'd always have ads for Time Life's best of The Dean Martin Show releases.

Those angels at Time/Life have done it again! As announced a couple of weeks ago, they're releasing some RARE Red Skelton- episodes that haven't been seen since they aired more than fifty years ago. These middle seasons of the series have been in such a deadlock, I can only imagine what was done to get them released. (They're definitely going against the stipulations of Skelton's will by doing this).

As far as I know it, the Red Skelton Estate owns most or all of the series. It's alleged that Red was so bitter about being canceled by CBS in 1970's Rural Purge that he wouldn't allow his series to be rerun and that he had it written in his will that after his death ALL tapes of his series were to be burned. Apparently his former writers took him to court on this around 1979, which caused a bit of a media stir. When asked about it Red said it was a misunderstanding and in 1980 he agreed to have eight seasons of the show preserved, but I'm pretty sure the entire series is in existence. I don't know the exact story, but I expect that all releases of the series have been approved by his widow Lothian.

Interesting! I had no idea (haven't seen any of Red's shows since their original CBS & NBC airings)! Still doesn't "explain" Mama Lawrence though...

Happy to say that the Skelton set was under the tree on Christmas. From what I've watched so far, the unreleased episodes are lots of wacky, late 60s fun. The episodes are mostly complete- if anything's cut it's just the occaisional musical number. So far, every one of the "lost" episodes has had Lucy writers on staff- usually Fox & Jacobs, and in one instance Schiller and Weiskopf. There have also been a couple of Lucy regulars in small roles- Reta Shaw and Doris Singleton!
