rickee
Was looking at YouTube and came across one of Doris Singleton's episodes of "Hogan's Heroes", entitled "How to Win Friends and Influence Nazis" (#3.7). The lady worked so much is episodic TV and here's a few grabs from this show: If you want to see the episode (in 3 parts)...here's a link to the 2nd part where Doris first appears: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8n-Fhl6KMts (she comes in at just about 5:01) and the 3rd part (where she comes in at 2:44) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzscRqCnIV8&feature=related Enjoy.
JoeySanJoaquin
Cool, Rick! Thanks for that. Just curious (no, I haven't watched the clip yet!): Does Doris do her own singing or did they draft Carole Cook???
HarryCarter
Cool, Rick! Thanks for that. Just curious (no, I haven't watched the clip yet!): Does Doris do her own singing or did they draft Carole Cook??? It's her voice and she's great. She was a big band singer early in her career. JoeySanJoaquin
It's her voice and she's great. She was a big band singer early in her career. (As LB would say it) I didn't know that!
rickee
It's her voice and she's great. She was a big band singer early in her career. Yep..sure is. Doris was also a ballet dancer. She is a very multi-talented woman. I've been very lucky to spend some quality time with her recently and she never ceases to amaze me. A truly lovely lady.

Brock
This is wonderful! Thanks, Rick! There is no mistaking Doris' distinctive voice, even with German accent.

Brock
Since we're rapidly updating our status with favourite Doris related quotes, let's post them here as a permanent record: Carolyn: He looked up, raised his widdle hand and said...'Bye-bye!' Fred: Bye Bye?! Doris on All in the Family: MRS. BUNKER, I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR TWINKIES!!!
Magster
The exact quote escapes me at the moment, but this has always been one of my favorites: Carolyn: That's a lovely outfit. Lucy: Thanks, do you like it? Carolyn: you know I always have.
Magster
Carolyn: Oh, Lucy, Charley didn't mean Little Ricky's all pinched and funny-looking. He outgrew that, didn't he?

chedderchester
Another: Lucy: Carolyn, is that a new dress? Carolyn: Oh, this old rag? Lucy: Yes. What did Lucy Ricardo REALLY think of Carolyn/Lillian Appleby? It must have been a love-hate thing.
JoeySanJoaquin
What did Lucy Ricardo REALLY think of Carolyn/Lillian Appleby? It must have been a love-hate thing. They seemed to be best of friends except whenever their children were involved, whether who had the cutest kid or whatever. Of course, the "level" of friendship was always served by the demands of that episodes script. Does anyone else notice/feel that DS played Carolyn slightly more "dumb" or naive in the Hollywood episodes? It seemed as if when she wore those glasses she lost a few IQ points or something.....just saying.

We know what the California Sun could do to Lucy's skin (her nose, in particular) so imagine what it could do to Carolyn's brain. Instead, I like to think Carolyn was just giddy about being potentially so close to movie stars and of her impending trip to Hawaii -- even though she planned the whole trip just to show Lucy up. Speaking of Doris, as one does in a Doris thread, has anyone ever seen Affair In Reno? It must be the only film in which she was the leading lady. rickee
Speaking of Doris, as one does in a Doris thread, has anyone ever seen Affair In Reno? It must be the only film in which she was the leading lady. Hi Brock: Yes, I have it and have seen "Affair in Reno" and it's almost like a TV show on film. Doris, believe it or not is a hired female bodyguard, Nora Ballard for John Lund's, Bill Carter. Here is IMDB's synopsis: Gloria Hall, an irresponsible heiress, is in Reno for her second divorce, and falls for Tony Lamarr, a fortune-hunting gambler and casino owner. J. B. Del Monte, her father in New York City, sends his public-relations man, Bill Carter, to buy off the gambler if Carter is not successful in convincing Glaoria that Lamarr is interested only in her money. When Bill is attacked at the Reno airport, Del Monte arranges, sight-unseen, for a bodyguard to go to Reno to look after Carter...and his $100,000. The bodyguard turns out to be Nora Ballard, an attractive girl and a Judo expert. As mini-tribute to Doris and the film, here are 2 photo-spreads. She sure was a beautiful woman. By the way, the lady in red on the posters, is Doris!
Neil
It's her voice and she's great. She was a big band singer early in her career. All the MORE reason to have kept her on as a Here's Lucy regular! Was her HL character given a name? I don't remember. I never thought about Carolyn's slight change of character in California, but you're right. I don't know that the New York Carolyn would have been quite as supportive of Lucy vancing with Dan--probably would scheme to do it herself. Ethel: Don't get too close. You'll catch his (Clark Gable's) cold. Carolyn: Well, WHO CARES??? In addition to the 10 episodes she's mentioned in several others. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is "Salad Dressing" "Just show her money and she'll do anything. She is the greediest, the penny-pinching-est, the....CAROLYN, DARLING this is your old chum LUCY"

So her character's name was "Doris Singleton" (those writers were very creative with character names). I have a copy of the original script and the character's name was "Carole Elkins." I wonder if Miss Cook was considered for the role early on. Other episodes where Carolyn or the Applebys were mentioned: "The French Revue" "Ricky's Contract" "Lucy Gets in Pictures" (as Lillian Appleby) "Ricky's European Booking" "Country Club Dance"

I don't remember she and Lucy have any dialog together. Given that they weren't going to use her after that episode, it's odd that they left her in. Doris' character does not have any additional lines or scenes in the script. All the script specifies is that Carole/Doris is his morning secretary and Lucy is his secretary in the afternoon. She and Lucy do not even appear in the same scene.
Neil
Here's a little Doris Singleton trivia question: How many first names did characters Doris played have whose last name was Appleby? Hint: there were THREE!!!
vivfantoo*
Joey, yes, she does seem to lose a few IQ points during her visit to Hollywood ... Brock, I haven't seen that movie, but will look for an inexpenisce copy of it if she is stars in it. Have you seen any of the old "Angel" episodes that were written by Jess Oppenheimer, where she plays the neighbor? Thanks for the synopsis & pics, Rickee! Neil, I can only think of two --Lillian & Caroline. There are three ? Do tell! My favorite line(s) of hers is after Lucy has dropped by Caroline's apartment with Little Ricky, unannounced, & they've traded a few thinly disguised insults: "It was so nice of you to drop by. How long must you stay?"
