C L A U D E
Yeah, Carol Burnett's Norma Desmond copy was different from her other old lady loon, but the basic elements are always there, trouble walking, not knowing what's really going on, but Lucy never would have had the hanging boobs that Carol's Norma clone did, thank God! Luvsbway
I don't like the Dirty Gertie character but get a kick out of her old lady with Wally Cox. With Vivian has a great ending line between Vivian and Lucy about her being old. Very sweet.
C L A U D E
Oh yeah, forgot about those two, loved it also. "HE SAID I HAD NICE LEGS!"
FreddieMertz
My favorite Viv ep from HL is Lawrence Welk. The final scene from 'With Viv as a Friend...' is a bit jarring because that's how my grandma acted in her later years
C L A U D E
Oh yeah, the best one, both were terrific in that Welk one.
Luvsbway
Except for Welk. The dummy acted better.
C L A U D E
Yes, but the idea of both being fanatical fans of Welk and getting to meet him were wunnerful wunnerful. For the times I mean, Welk had a huge following at that time among the older folk and she looked incredible, the premise was terrific so who cares if his wooden fake acting wasn't up to par, like Liberace, they were there for the plot and ratings and being icons, not their acting, LOL! FreddieMertz
My grandma and I would watch Welk's show every Saturday. I LOVE the first scene with Larry where every time the audience laughs he looks directly at them with this huge grin!
C L A U D E
I know, it is distracting, but no more than the Liberace one. I think it was the idea of having that legend of tv on that made the show great, regardless of the way he can't act his way out of a paper bag. My parents watched him every Saturday also, till the day they died. How do you like the way they still mock him so many years after he's passed on SNL? Irene Kampen Tripp
I really like the Welk episode .. It is corny but fun.... Really there are far worse episodes
C L A U D E
True, I find it has a great premise, for once the star was used perfectly, it's funny, people at that time adored it and that last scene with Lucy and Viv dancing with him (every older lady's wet dream) is just perfect, they seem to genuinely be having so much fun there. Irene Kampen Tripp
Oh...speaking of the last sceen.. It bothers me Lucy wont let Vivian have her moment.... It wouldnt have pained Lucy in the least and would have wrapped that episode up in a sweet way. Its not funny to see Viv cast aside.
C L A U D E
But, again, it's comedy show and they wanted the scene to end comedically, there was already enough sweetness on the series. The whole world KNEW how those ladies loved each other, and again, dancing with Welk was a thrill for any woman that age so they played that up instead. Mot Morenzi
Oh...speaking of the last sceen.. It bothers me Lucy wont let Vivian have her moment.... It wouldnt have pained Lucy in the least and would have wrapped that episode up in a sweet way. Its not funny to see Viv cast aside. That was a rather telling scene. Sort of indicative of their relationship. However fond they were of each other, Viv could never be in the spotlight longer than Lucy. I know Viv was quoted as refusing to let Lucille cut many of her lines from that show. She had earned enough clout to stand her ground.
