Brock
A highway bridge in Jamestown will be re-named in Lucy and Desi's honour, according to this statement just sent out by the Lucy-Desi Center: Bridge in Lucy's hometown renamed in Lucy and Desi's honor "I am extremely pleased that the State Assembly joined the Senate last week to approve legislation to name the I-86 bridge over North Main Street in honor of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. The bridge sign on the expressway will serve as a constant reminder of the great contributions from America's favorite comedians, and will help promote the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Center in Jamestown," said Assemblyman Andy Goodell. Senator Kathy Young successfully obtained Senate approval for this legislation both last year and this year. It was extremely difficult, however, to get this type of legislation through the Assembly. Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz, Jr. had the following reaction on behalf of the family: "That is such thrilling news!!!! Believe it or not, that will be the first place, anywhere, to ever be named in their honor. No place they have ever lived or worked has done that for them. Not Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Palm Springs, Del Mar, nowhere. On their behalf, we thank you, Jamestown!!!!!!!!!!!!!" - Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz, Jr. "In addition to obtaining the support of the ranking member of the Transportation Committee, I personally lobbied for this legislation with the Democrat Chairman of the committee. I also recruited some well-respected Democrat legislators, a Cuba-American legislator, and others as cosponsors," noted Assemblyman Goodell. In speaking on behalf of the bill on the floor of the Assembly, Assemblyman Goodell noted "Lucille Ball was more than a great comedienne. This great New Yorker was also a true pioneer." He went on to cite the couple's impact on the production side of television history with the company they built together, Desilu Productions. He noted their innovations in the use of a three-camera angle technique, their development of the concept of syndication, and the successful products of that studio including Star Trek and Mission Impossible. "Lucille Ball went on to become the first female head of a major television production company, having already broken several cultural barriers with her marriage to a Cuban immigrant and by openly showing her pregnancy on their television show. She was a tremendous performer, businesswoman, and individual." "Lucille Ball always remembered her hometown, as evidenced by the couple choosing to host the world premiere of their first movie together right here in Jamestown at the peak of their fame. The naming of this bridge is a well-deserved and fitting tribute to these great individuals," said Assemblyman Goodell. I wonder if it will be called the "Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Bridge", the "Lucy-Desi Bridge", the "Ball-Arnaz Bridge" or what? UPDATED: Word from Journey Gunderson is the official name of the bridge will be the "Lucille Ball - Desi Arnaz Memorial Bridge"!

IMO that's a bit of a mouthful and since this IS Lucille Ball's hometown, I think The Lucy Bridge would be more appropriate. And when someone tries to do a U-turn in the Holland tunnel, they can say "Traffic was backed up all the way to the Lucille Ball- Desi Arnaz Memorial Bridge!" I agree with you, Neil, I just didn't want to say anything because I seem to annoy people a lot. Desi had nothing to do with Jamestown. It should just be the Lucy Memorial Bridge IMO. I'm agreeing with both of you..Jamestown is about Lucy..she was born and raised around there and so what does it have to do with Desi except with the fact that Lucy married him and so that's why he has something to do with the town. Just my opinion. They'll probably abbreviate it to the L.B.D.A.M bridge.. then it loses it's proud name.. if it was the Lucille Ball Bridge.. It wouldn't need the abbreviation...just sayin.. Hell, if I lived around there, I'd just call it the Lucy Bridge out of spite. And the LBDAM Bridge?? Is that pronounced the LB DAMN Bridge? I think Desi was in Jamestown once in 1956. Yep, let's name a bridge after him...
HarryCarter
I'm not taking any side here, but Desi was named an honorary son of Jamestown in 1956.

HarryCarter
LOL. Well that's reason enough then. I'll shut up. Desi didn't think he had a hometown of his own anymore. He couldn't go back to Santiago, Cuba, so Jamestown adopted him.
Gypsy
Yep..it's America..we can all get along here. And we can all have our own opinions. Also..when we go to Jamestown next year.. We'll take pics on the Lucy Desi Bridge.. hehe But I can bet you guys we'll just call it the Lucy bridge! Just my opinion.. just a lot shorter and easier to say. Glad they called him an honorary son or whatever. Nice.
Taylor
Well if he's their honorary son, they'd better start playing catch-up and name some schools and streets after him too. Just sayin'.
Annaleigh
Don't understand why its such a big deal. At least Jamestown is recognizing Desi and his talents. Somewhere in the world has to. I love that they both not only Lucy are recognized there. Go Jamestown!
