Was it Lilian Appleby who Lucy describes on Dinah! making her first trip out to California around this time?

Yes. Lillian had always taught her students about California's Yose-mite Valley and Lucy had to be corrected of the pronunciation after she moved to California. Mrs. Appleby's daughter moved to northern California and Lucy told Lillian that if she ever came to California to see her daughter, she wanted them to come to Chatsworth for a visit. Mrs. Appleby and her daughter visited Lucy and Lillian recounted their drive through California - pronouncing every spot phonetically (La Jolla, San Diego, Ventura). Lucy loved that story.
