C L A U D E
I know where they all were, but the pool shot could have been taken from one side or the other putting either in the background of the shot. Thanks for the year though, I should have known that from the age of the baby.

Luvsbway
Home video footage on Season 4 of HL special features shows a clear shot of the step end of the pool. This was definitely at Lucy's pool.
LittleRickyII
Was this interview from 89’? I thought it was more like 90’/91’? If we are talking about the same one, is it her and Joan with a one on one, no audience? I thought I had this on VHS somewhere but couldn’t find it when I was doing a VHS to DVD conversion recently. What I do remember is it was on the harsher side in tone, but I watched it in hindsight that Lucie learned so much out about her mother in the Home Movie creation process that I think it answered a lot of what she was talking about in this interview. I don’t remember any specifics though. Maybe the reaction being bad was because it was the first not so great things said about Lucy not long after her death and especially from a family member. The public had no buffer for hearing anything negative as the woman was not long dead and any negative while she was alive was from industry people. Yes, it was early 1990, and it was in front of an audience. I watched it when it originally aired and, at that moment, didn't think much of it. Lucie came across as honest to me. I didn't find anything terribly negative or harsh. I remember her making a comment during the interview that was slightly critical, then she gazed up as if looking towards heaven and said, "now don't get mad." All in all, I thought her comments were balanced and respectful. But then a few days later, tabloid magazines were screaming, "Lucie Arnaz calls her mother a control freak!," and I was thinking, was that the same interview I saw??? Okay, granted, she did use the term control freak, but she wasn't saying it in a necessarily negative way. And she elaborated, saying her mother, opposite her father, always wanted everything under control and in complete order. And she went on to say how her mother's will had everything laid out perfectly and in complete order, which was a huge blessing for the family. And she said that orderliness was one way her mother demonstrated her love to her, as she had difficulty expressing it in more tangible ways. She also mentioned that, when she was a child, her mother might lose her temper if she did something wrong. But she surmised that she might have picked up that behavior from her own mother, and it was just a behavior passed from generation to generation. All in all, her remarks seemed to me like a fair and honest assessment. I guess some people would just Lucie to say everything was all laughter and roses, but it wouldn't be honest and it wouldn't be real. Her mother was a human and had human shortcomings, as all people do. And that's all she was trying to convey in that interview. I think I figured out more of the story of the video and the pool. I listened to the second Wanda and Frank interview from Stu’s show. Katie was right, this is a great interview. Lots of stuff not touched on in the first one, or in the one from earlier this year. Wanda shared this story. Lucie was going to do a movie in NM and had just had Simon. Well Lucy calls her up and says can I take the kid while you are away. First this goes against the notion presented in Lee’s book that she did not like to be around her grandkids. Well it ended up Lucy came down with the flu at some point in this visit and Lucie misses her kid anyways, so Wanda takes Simon on the plane and flys down to NM to reunite the family. So this makes sense to me. Lucy is taking care of the kid for a few days (before she gets the flu), probably calls up Desi and says I have the grandkid why don’t you come and visit. Stu gets wind of this and comes over with the video camera, teaches Frank how to use it and that’s how we end up with this wonderful footage. Now this still does not answer the question who’s pool it was. I am very inclined to think it’s Lucy’s. You would have to compare the step area to photos to really come up with a conclusion. I met Frank several years ago, and he brought up this video at the pool. I had never realized it was Frank shooting the footage until he told me that day. But anyway, I could have sworn he said it was Lucy's pool. It would have stuck out in my head if he had said it was Lucie's pool. He did tell me that, when he was about to start taping Lucy and Desi, Lucy went into full movie director's mode and started giving Frank orders on where to stand, how to hold the camera, the direction to point it, etc. He seemed rather amused by it, but it seems that even in a casual moment like that, she couldn't just relax and trust the guy to shoot a little piece of harmless, private video. It was still serious business to her.
Luvsbway
Thanks for the info on the pool video. And yes I agree with what you said on the River's interview.
Neil
Thanks for the heads up on the interviews. I had heard Wanda and Frank at other Lucy events and really enjoyed their interview earlier this year. I will be hitting those older interviews ASAP, they have wonderful stories. I’ll have to go back and watch that pool footage again. It’s a very good possibility that the person laughing could have been Edie. I would think she would have come along to visit as well. I believe Lucy directs her comment to someone who is not shooting. Another thing that I thought one time, was how common were personal video cameras back then? This would have been 1981. We did not get our first video camera until 1989. All my baby footage in 1981 was on super 8 film. Stu having the camera makes sense as he did video stuff back then. I would think that it would be very cost prohibitive to have them at that time even if you were making some bucks. According to someone who has seen the whole unedited video Gary is there and wearing a BATHING CAP! So the toupee must have been at the cleaners or something. You'd think there would be ONE picture somewhere of Gary without it. I honestly didn't know he wore one until it was revealed in some book and I think that was after his death. I'm in the video business. As a matter of fact I had just started it in 1981 and they were indeed bulky. The camera and video tape recorder were separate units connected by a thick cable, the latter hung from your shoulder and was about the size of a VHS VCR but narrower and taller....and it weighed a TON. Cameras for home use were just beginning to be sold but were very expensive and the picture looked like garbage unless you had a LOT of light. C L A U D E
Nothing wrong with calling one's mother a REAL CONTROL FREAK, a while after she passed, guess she just wanted to shatter her General Foods image with the public. And Lucy telling her employee how to film with HER camera, especially a rare moment like the two of them together with their first grandchild, no she should have just let him film any way he wanted, sheesh! Brock
... Anyway, I think it was common knowledge decades before 1989 that Lucy was a perfectionist and hardly breaking, image-shattering news. Besides, there's nothing necessarily wrong with being a "control freak" aside from the phrasing.
C L A U D E
True, but the woman does not get called a perfectionist like they do for Hoffman, Lucy falls in the Streisand category of beeatch from hell. Of course the people who get quoted in books are looking to look important and be quoted in the first place so the more salacious the better. Did Lucie get asked to be with Joan because she was plugging something or because, as usual, she was Lucille Ball's daughter? Oh wait, it was probably the Home Videos, you know, filmed by Lucy and Desi. Shame Lucie only got a couple of celebs to participate, guess the other ones were not negative enough. Hey, I TRIED to not say anything, I swear!

Taylor
Yeah, Lucy was a perfectionist and a control freak probably because of the way she grew up and the things that happened to her -- her family problems and other tragedies -- so maybe she felt she needed to assert some control in her life so that stuff never happened again. I don't see why that's a bad thing to be called. She might've benefited from some psychoanalysis but you didn't do that back then really unless you wanted your bidnazz splashed all over the tabloids. I suppose that's what Lucie was getting at but it was taken out of context. Anyway, we all know that Lucy was as good a mother as she could be and a good person overall, so I cringe anytime I hear someone make the remark she was a bitch on wheels and a hateful person. That's my 2 cents.
Luvsbway
This Joan interview was before the Home Movies was even made and I suspect before Lucie even started on that journey based on how she talks about her parents. She learned so much then she clearly didn't know in this interview.
